Dog Vaccines

Happy Tuesday to you!  I hope your day has gone smoothly, thus far.  Mine has been pretty good-I took Hunter in for his annual exam and he did well.  He shakes the entire time and his little heart is racing, but he only needed a Bordetella oral vacine and so that was good.  Of course, it wasn't that simple either because I had to buy his Heartguard Chews and I picked up some Hextra Chews to help his teeth.
I want to ask if any of you dog owners are vaccinating against Lepto.  This is a fairly new vaccine that protects against a bacterial disease spread by wildlife.  I've read that there has been a huge outbreak in the midwest and so the vets are really pushing this to protect our dogs.  Having said that, I have mixed feelings about vaccines; I think there is always a new one each year.  While I want my dog healthy and living a nice long life, part of me wonders if all the vaccines are really needed.  Since we don't go camping or into wildnerness areas with Hunter, he is not likely to be exposed. I would hate for him to get a disease due to my lack of info.  So feel free to share you thoughts here, I'm interested to know what you are thinking.
We have a dinner to go to with friends and I'm not feeling up to par; it is nothing catchy, but feels like I have a yeast infection again.  Our tile man didn't show up today, though he told me he would.  Guess I'll have to call the store and get his number; don't want to miss him.
It is cloud and misty here today, a perfect day to stay inside.
Hope you have a great afternoon and evening.

  1. Just because you don't take your dog camping or in wildlife areas - doesn't mean the wildlife aren't coming around where you live. Better to be safe, than sorry, in my humble opinion.

I felt the same way about the Bordatella vaccine - I don't take my dog to the dog park or kennel her, but one year, she managed to contract kennel cough - and she wasn't even around a single other dog leading up to it! I take her hiking frequently and it's possible she picked it up that way. Needless to say, I now make sure she is vaccinated.

  2. I haven't heard of that vaccine. Skye goes for a recheck on her ear this Thursday and is due for her Bordetella. I wonder if they will mention it. Hope you feel better and have a nice a good time at dinner.

  3. Hi Noreen, They do recommend lepto here (Iowa); at least our vet does. However, my dog has had anaphylactic reaction to vaccines twice requiring emergency care. The vet at the pharmaceutical company this was reported to has recommended that my dog never receive any further vaccinations - it could kill her. It means I have to be extra careful around other dogs (no contact) and probably will not be able to board or take her to the groomer after her current vaccination status is expired.

  4. Yes Miggs gets vaccinated for rabies and other wild animal related diseases as well as the heart guard , flea , mite & tick medication as we live in a valley full of wild life . Even though our cat is an indoor cat she gets all the vaccines as well as Miggs can be a carrier or transfer to the cat even if not ill herself . Other domestic animals who dont get shots or vet checked properly which there are a lot of people who dont go the lengths to protect their pets as we do can also be carriers of these diseases and spread them to your pet if not protected . Hope all work out well for Hunter and hope you feel better soon . Have a good day !

  5. Yes Chance gets the Lepto but we live in the woods. I would do whatever your Vet recommends, they see trends that we as pet owners don't. :)

  6. We have actually been getting the canine influenza shot for several years now. It is not specifically designed to protect against the latest strain of the virus, but our vet said it should offer some protection. Better to be safe than get that nasty virus.

  7. I haven't heard of the Lepto virus. Maybe here in the city it isn't such a concern. However, we do have coyotes and javelina running around the area all the time. Need to check into that one. Enjoy the rest of your day and dinner with friends! Blessings, Cindy

  9. Noreen, I think you are right...they know you love your pet and they want to over do just like they do us humans. I think like you...if your pet is not out where the wild life lives your pet is safe. I felt sorry for your dog shaking. It's almost like me going to the dentist. :) Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  10. After we lost a beautiful healthy puppy who had to put to sleep after being brain damaged by a vaccine at 10 weeks old we are very careful about what vaccines we give our dogs. Here in the UK vets have been pushing the Leptospirosis vaccine for some time even though the disease is rare here. Pharmaceutical companies make big bucks from selling vaccines and what is good for the dog is often forgotten where profits are concerned. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association says that the Leptospirosis vaccine is the least reliable and most likely to cause adverse reactions than any other vaccine and they do not recommend it for small breed dogs as these are the most likely to have the worst reactions. It is always hard making decisions about your canine family but we never give Lepto vaccine to any of our seven dogs. Keep them fit and healthy and they are better equipped to resist disease and, if they do fall ill, get treatment quickly - that is my view - Leigh ( Magic's mum ) xx
