Flashback Friday

Happy Friday to you! Fall is definitely here and although the temps get higher during the day, our mornings are really cool and crisp. I'm in shorts and a top, but while taking Duckie out for his morning bathroom walk, I felt chilly.
Today will be a fun afternoon, for I'm taking our two oldest granddaughters to a quilt show and then we will head to a store to pick out a complete outfit for one who is turning 10 next week.  I decided that this would be a fun tradition with the girls-to have Nana take the birthday girl out shopping.  This includes shoes and a purse,  maybe even a wallet.
So onto today's question-when you were growing up, did you have one dinner per week that was always the same?  For me, Sunday's were a special family dinner~complete with Roast Beef, Gravy, Potatoes and a vegetable.  It never varied and we always looked forward to that day. My dad had the ability to make a inexpensive cut of beef roast taste and look like a prime rib.  It was always perfectly cooked and so delicious.  I think many of us grew up with that type of family tradition. We didn't carry it over with our children; however, when we lived in Silicon Valley there was a little Chinese market near us and on every Friday they got fresh Dim Sum in from San Francisco.  We looked forward to this for Friday night dinners; I do miss those delicacies, but couldn't eat them now either because I am gluten free.  So what meal is stored in your memory bank of your childhood?
May your day and weekend be filled with memories that make you smile.
Hugs,
Noreen

  1. Have a fun time at the quilt show and shopping. I would agree with you, I believe Sunday dinner was always the same and similar to yours. I certainly did not follow that same pattern with my family. Wait, I take that back, we have pizza Friday!

  2. Great gift to take your granddaughter shopping for a new outfit. Our one constant meal growing up was fried chicken on Sunday. Now we have a constant meal on Saturday - steak and baked potato.

  3. For a while there, Saturday night was Taco night growing up. That was always a lot of fun.
I love your new tradition of taking the birthday grand shopping!

  4. Sunday dinner was always special in both our mom and dads homes growing up. Bit they had the big meal at noon. Now mom always makes a nice dinner on Sunday's but it is at night:).

  5. Noreen, We are having crisp morning also. Growing up we had mommy's fried chicken on Sundays. With my daughter our thing was peanut butter fudge and popcorn while watching the Charlie Brown Specials... Miss those good old days. Blessings to all, xoxo,Susie

  6. Sunday dinners, since we went to church, was something we mom could throw in the oven and we could eat when we got home. Roast with potatoes and carrots and cole slaw. Once a month we would make fried chicken, mashed potatoes, salad and a veggie. Sliced tomatoes in the summer. I like your new tradition with the girls. My grandparents would take us shopping for Christmas. We would go on a Saturday and shop at the mall and eat lunch out. Since we rarely ate out, not like now, that was always so special.

  7. It is glorious around here these days, isn't it? As for me, there wasn't any one meal that was always the same. But my mom always loved making "Everything Salads" when she was tired. It would include everything she could find in the fridge! They were never the same, one time to the next.

  8. Hmmm...I do remember that we ate dinner at the table often, but I cannot remember any particular meal. Pizza at Shakeys with my cousins, steak at Sizzler, and always a HUGE Thanksgiving Feast, but other than that, I can't recall. Have a super weekend! Blessings, Cindy

  9. I can't wait until we have crisp cool mornings too. But I have a feeling they are still at least a few weeks away...My mother was such a good cook and she made BIG dinners all the time. What I do remember was she baked a cake every Sunday afternoon after church. Always different, and always delicious. And on Sat. night my dad made his special hamburgers, but the part I remember most was he made thick chocolate malts to go with them....sooo good. Love the idea of shopping with you grand daughters. i do that too [or I did] with my two oldest grand daughters for a few years. Anymore grandma is not much of a shopper with these knees. But it is a great memory. Have a good week-end!

  10. Our days have been very warm and we often forget that it is Autumn since it feels like summer! No, did not have a standard meal. Mostly it depended on how close it was to payday! BTW, to answer your question, it is a trailer, not a motor home, and is a few feet longer than the old one but has more space due to the slide out (a double).

  11. Well, I had a comment written Friday ... but I sure don't see it now. :-( We didn't have a tradition like when when I was growing up, so I didn't even think about doing that when DD was growing up. The closest we came is that we'd frequently go to a local pizza place for lunch after church. That pizza place is still open, and DD and I have a new tradition ... we order delivery from there for our lunch when we're baking Christmas cookies. I hope that the Ts look back on those cookie baking days with fondness.
