For The Love Of Climbing

Our oldest grandson loves rock climbing and both brothers have been taking a class at our recreation center. Last weekend, after snowshoeing, the boys were able to climb at the ski rental store in Estes. There is a full size climbing wall there and they loved it; some of the granddaughters also climbed and did really well, o.k. exceptionally well. This week when the boys returned to their weekly climbing class, it seemed so easy because the wall is so much shorter than they'd been on over the weekend.

This grandson is turning 12 in a little over a week; he reminds me of how I loved to climb-anything, when I was younger. The boys below him are on the floor; the top of the wall is approximately 16' high.

Mr. B loves to participate in anything big brother does.

I grew up being a tomboy; climbed trees, fences and roofs but things were so different then. In college, I worked with a fellow who was an advanced rock climber; he and his wife befriended me and took me climbing. Of course, these were the days before indoor climbing was around; we just went to state parks to climb; I was also known to climb the sides of a  building or two.  I never got to the point where I climbed famous walls, like Yosemite, although I was invited to- but I loved climbing; I was told I was like a spider or a mountain goat who just flew up the walls. Like many things of my youth, I gave up this sport when I settled down; if I were younger and had the opportunity, I would probably still climb. I'm glad that our grandchildren are enjoying a sport that their nana loved.
I hope that you smile when you think back on activities of your youth.
Enjoy the day!

  3. I'm in awe that you were a climber. That is something that looks like fun, but there's no way that I would ever attempt a climb ... not now nor not 30-40 years ago! ;-)

  4. Know what? I think you should climb again. Yep I do. Sounds like you enjoyed it very much. And how cool would it be for your grands to say "Yea I climb rocks and walls with my nanna." My MOM once did a rock climbing wall. We had it at the church for a fun run chili cook off thingy. Some of the congregation members challenged MOM to race the Senior pastor to the top. Yep my MOM smoked the senior pastor. OK I know I should not gloat over that, but it was way cool to see my MOM fly up that wall.

  6. Oh for the energy of a young lad! Just yesterday, two of the neighbor boys climbed a Maple Tree not far from our back fency. I could hear them before my eye found them, but they were happily celebrating Spring & all things adventurous. Had I been 10 years younger, I just might have joined them.

  7. Loved the photographs. I loved climbing as a child, but never tried rock climbing. It's a great sport.

  8. Rock climbing is so fun! Indoors and outdoors. I'm a little afraid of heights but it is still a fun activity!

  9. Mom says there is no reason for you not to climb. Age? No excuse!
